Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent Afro-American leader in the African American civil rights movement. He has become an iconic figure in the history of American liberalism and politics, best known for his dedication to civil rights and equality. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King’s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his icnonic “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he expanded American values to include the vision of a “color blind society”, and established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American and World history.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986.

Legacy

Martin Luther King I have a dream

King’s main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, which has enabled more Americans to reach their potential. He is frequently referenced as a human rights icon today. His name and legacy have often been invoked since his death as people have debated his likely position on various modern political issues.

On the international scene, King’s legacy included influences on the Black Consciousness Movement and Civil Rights Movement in South Africa. King’s work was cited by and served as an inspiration for Albert Lutuli, another black Nobel Peace prize winner who fought for racial justice in that country.

King’s wife, Coretta Scott King, followed her husband’s footsteps and was active in matters of social justice and civil rights until her death in 2006. The same year that Martin Luther King was assassinated, Mrs. King established the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia, dedicated to preserving his legacy and the work of championing nonviolent conflict resolution and tolerance worldwide. His son, Dexter King, currently serves as the center’s chairman. Daughter Yolanda King is a motivational speaker, author and founder of Higher Ground Productions, an organization specializing in diversity training.

In 1980, the Department of Interior designated King’s boyhood home in Atlanta and several nearby buildings the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. In 1996, United States Congress authorized the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity to establish a foundation to manage fund raising and design of a Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC. King was the first African American honored with his own memorial in the National Mall area and the first non-President to be commemorated in such a way.

King’s life and assassination inspired many artistic works. A 1976 Broadway production, I Have a Dream, was directed by Robert Greenwald and starred Billy Dee Williams as King. In spring of 2006, a stage play Passages of Martin Luther King about King was produced in Beijing, China with King portrayed by Chinese actor, Cao Li. The play was written by Stanford University professor, Clayborne Carson. King spoke earlier about what people should remember him for if they are around for his funeral. He said rather than his awards and where he went to school, people should talk about how he fought peacefully for justice.

Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is an American television host, producer, and philanthropist, who has influenced the world through her thoughts and beliefs via her hugely successful talk show the Oprah Winfrey Show. She has educated and influenced her global audience on topics such as health and well-being, literature, self-improvement, spirituality, politics, history, world culture, philanthropy, fashion, education, finance, relationships and love, and allowed us to enter into the lives and homes of many celebrities. Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and experienced considerable hardship during her childhood, including being raped at the age of nine and becoming pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy. Sent to live with the man she calls her father, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. To date, Oprah’s Angel Network has raised more than $51,000,000. Winfrey personally covers all administrative costs associated with the charity, so 100% of all funds raised go to charity programs.

Although Winfrey’s show is known for raising money through her public charity and the cars and gifts she gives away on TV are often donated by corporations in exchange for publicity, behind the scenes Winfrey personally donates more of her own money to charity than any other show-business celebrity in America. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America’s top 50 most generous philanthropists, having given an estimated $303 million. Winfrey was the 32nd most philanthropic. She has also been repeatedly ranked as the most philanthropic celebrity.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oprah asked her viewers to open their hearts—and they did. As of September 2006, donations to the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry total more than $11 million. Homes have been built in four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama—before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Winfrey also matched her viewers’ donations by personally giving $10 million to the cause.

Winfrey has also helped 250 African-American men continue or complete their education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Winfrey was the recipient of the first Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2002 Emmy Awards for services to television and film.

Winfrey invested $40 million and some of her time establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg, South Africa. The school opened in January 2007. This lovable Brit is not only a talented Chef, but has taken his passion and love for food to people all over the world through inspiring the UK and the rest of the world to cook healthy nutritious food. Jamie Oliver has made his mark on the world through his books, television series, and wanting to make a difference through offering opportunities to disadvantaged teenagers and ensuring that school students get the nutritious food that they deserve.

Achievements

· Oliver created the Fifteen Foundation in 2002. Each year, 15 young adults who have a disadvantaged background, criminal record or history of drug abuse, are trained in the restaurant business.

· In 2003, he was awarded an MBE.

· In 2005, he initiated a campaign called “Feed me Better” in order to move British school children towards eating healthy foods and cutting junk food. As a result, the British government also pledged to address the issue. Delving into politics to push for changes in nutrition resulted in people voting him as the “Most Inspiring Political Figure of 2005.”

· A great proponent of fresh organic foods, Oliver was named the most influential person in the UK hospitality industry when he topped the inaugural CatererSearch 100 in May 2005. In 2006, Oliver was named 2nd on the list behind fellow celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

· Oliver is a patron of environmental charity Trees for Cities.

Making A Difference

Wanting to create something positive using his wealth and fame, Oliver conceived and established the Fifteen charity restaurant where he trained 15 disadvantaged young people to work in the hospitality industry. Following the success of the original restaurant in London, more Fifteens have opened around the globe: Fifteen Amsterdam opened in December 2004, Fifteen Cornwall in Newquay opened in May 2006, and Fifteen Melbourne opened in September 2006 with Australian friend and fellow chef Tobie Puttock.

Oliver then began a formal campaign to ban unhealthy food in British schools and get children eating fresh, tasty, nutritious food instead. Oliver’s efforts to bring radical change to the school meals system, chronicled in the series “Jamie’s School Dinners“, challenged the junk food culture by showing schools they could serve healthy, cost-efficient meals that kids enjoyed eating. Jamie’s efforts brought the subject of school dinners to the political forefront and changed the types of food served in schools. subsequent to Oliver’s efforts, the UK Government pledged to spend £280m on school dinners (spread over three years). Tony Blair himself acknowledged that this was a result of Oliver’s campaign. Following the success of the campaign, Oliver was named “Most Inspiring Political Figure of 2005″ in the Channel 4 Political Awards 2006.

Jamie Oliver plans to set his sights on America as he looks to tackle Americas child obesity crisis and achieve a similar outcome of healthy nutrition options in schools for American children, which will be aired on his show Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (2010).
